This year I will taking part in the ‘Ophelia Exhibition’ organised by Peterborough Artists’ Open Studios and Art in the Heart.
The exhibition runs from Saturday 25th June to Sunday 10th July at Art in the Heart (Bridge Street gallery) alongside a corresponding exhibition at the Peterborough City Gallery. It will showcase 26 commissioned pieces all responding to the character of Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
My piece (below) depicts a scene of serenity in Ophelia’s last moments as she lets go of her earthly possessions and sinks into the shallow water. The rising water represents the overwhelming sadness she is filled with following the death of her father and Hamlet’s rejection. In this moment she choses to give up, accepting her fate so that she may finally be at peace.
